I am officially in San Pedro, Belize. The plane ride over wasn’t too exciting, I did sit near this cute old lady though who would definitely be a very fun grandma to have. She has been traveling all over the place and has a boat in San Pedro, maybe we will meet again... When we landed in Belize City the airport was not much of a culture shock, to my dismay. But the little hopper flight over to San Pedro was an experience. It almost reminded me of the plane I took sky diving, but this one had seats and no polka dots.
As soon as we landed of course we went straight to the beach (after dropping our stuff off at Pedro’s Inn), which has a bunch of fancy looking resorts on it, and went swimming. The water was gorgeous, clear and blue/green. We swam out to the end of a pier, over really high seaweed. It was amazing. Once we got out there it was a little deeper, and the water was incredibly clear, I was surprised, though, that there were no fish. Wrong. We swam around a bit, and one girl told us if we go under and open our eyes we would see some fish, but I was not trying to open my eyes in the ocean. Then after we swam back, one from our group on shore pointed to this large bird that was eating an eel or snake looking thing, right from the seaweed we just swam over. Later the next day people went out there with snorkeling gear and saw a lot more fish, so I guess they just blend really well with their habitat, fancy that.
After the beach we had a chance to take in our home for the next month. We are on the third and top floor of the building. It’s a cute little spot, we do have bathrooms in our bedrooms, which I wasn’t sure what to expect in that regards, so I was happy there. We also have hot water- plus. I am sitting outside at the pool right now, which is across the street from the building with our rooms and right near Pedro’s Sports Bar and his other hotel rooms. The very first night we were here we were exhausted so we were sleeping, and sleeping well, when all of the sudden we heard this loud, LOUD, thundering all around us. I had no idea what it was, and me and Keeley (my roommate) both shot right up, I leaped out of bed and turned on the lights. I frantically looked about, as Keeley calmly observed that it was just the rain. The rain was coming down like crazy, and it was by far the loudest rain I had ever heard. Once I realized it was just the rain though, I managed to go back to bed.
I do have to say the only thing I was slightly disappointed with the first day is that everyone on the island speaks English (along with Spanish and Creole, but I only heard English) and all of the signs are English. But, it’s official language is English so I shouldn’t be surprised. The second day Dr. Kubasko (from here on out referred to as Dr. K) and Dr. Catapano took us for a tour around the village. We saw the schools, they were small. We are going in there today, so I’ll report more on that later. I was pleased to find some signs there were partially in Spanish as we were traveling around a little more outside of the touristy area (still not a lot though). Oh, we also saw a boy who was eleven, with a little pet racoon, named princess, it was following him everywhere, climbing on his shoulders and everything too.
Ta ta for now
